Freedom cannot be simulated is a site responsive outdoor installation created for the Menokin Foundation in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Installed adjacent to the Remembrance House, the work presents a split text across the landscape, pairing the bold word Freedom with the quieter phrase cannot be simulated to create a direct meditation on liberty, embodiment, and lived experience. Situated on Native land at Menokin, a site built by enslaved labor for Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the sculpture confronts the gap between the ideals of freedom and the realities of American history.
